Project name: CashBack @ Scran

Age range: 11-25 years

CashBack @ Scran is a place-based youth training and employment programme delivered by Scran Academy in and around West Pilton Park, Edinburgh. Using a purpose-built, youth-led community café, the project supports young people aged 11-25 who face barriers linked to poverty which put them at risk of involvement in antisocial behaviour or crime.

Using a mix of youth work, volunteer placements, and paid employment, CashBack @ Scran offers real-life positive alternatives to risk-taking behaviour. Young people involved are asked to take responsibility in a supportive café environment, building confidence, routine and transferrable skills in catering, customer service and teamwork. Alongside this hands-on experience, participants receive accredited training, 1:1 coaching and trauma-informed support tailored to their individual goals. Over the funding period, the project will engage around 300 young people. Younger participants access drop-in and group activity designed to build connection, confidence and early skills, while older participants progress through placements and paid roles that support transitions into employment, education or training. Ongoing mentoring ensures young people continue to receive support beyond their placement.

The café acts as a visible, positive hub within West Pilton Park – a safe space where young people are trusted with ownership and supported to lead. By working closely with local schools, youth services, social work, health and police partners, CashBack @ Scran reaches those most at risk and provides timely, preventative support. Ultimately, the project helps young people build safer, happier futures for themselves while strengthening community pride, safety and opportunity in West Pilton.
