Project name: Safemates – Peer Support through CashBack
Age range: 15-25 years
Safemates Scotland supports young people aged 15 to 25 in Glasgow, Dundee and Inverness who may be experiencing isolation, stress, boredom or limited opportunities. The project creates safe and welcoming spaces where young people can take part in activities that help them build confidence, develop new skills and feel more connected to their community.
The project is delivered through local Safemates groups, which run regular sessions throughout the year. These sessions include peer support training, practical skills such as first aid, activities that build resilience and wellbeing, and opportunities to develop leadership. All sessions are designed with young people, ensuring the content is relevant, engaging and shaped by their experiences.
Young people who take part can also choose to become Safemates volunteers. Volunteers support their peers at local events and community activities, helping others who may feel overwhelmed, anxious, unwell or at risk of harm. This peer support approach helps reduce stigma, builds trust and gives young people a real sense of purpose.
As participants progress, they can move into volunteering roles, help design future sessions, or take part in national activities. In the later stages of the project, young people can also explore opportunities to move into paid youth worker roles, providing long term progression and employment pathways.
Through local groups, tailored activities and youth led support, Safemates Scotland will help young people feel safe, included and capable of making positive change. It will strengthen communities by giving young people the tools, confidence and relationships they need to thrive.
