Project name: Big Hearts ‘CashBack Bright Lights’ Project
Age range: 13-18 years
Big Hearts is delivering a targeted, early intervention youth work programme for teenagers (13-18 years) who are at risk of anti-social behaviour and youth crime and who live in areas of high deprivation across South West Edinburgh. The programme combines structured daytime support with consistent evening diversionary youth work, creating regular contact with trusted adults and safe spaces for young people who are unlikely to engage with other services.
During term time, referral-based daytime sessions run on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 3pm in our dedicated community hub ‘The Shed’ at Tynecastle Park. Young people are referred by schools, social work and police. Sessions use football, physical activity, small group work and peer learning to help participants build confidence, improve communication, develop self-awareness and take responsibility for their choices. Staff work closely with referral partners to support attendance and respond to emerging needs.
This daytime provision is reinforced by weekly Friday evening sessions held year-round at the Big Hearts community hub. Delivered in partnership with community police, these sessions provide free access to hot food, sport and structured activities in a safe, supervised environment. Young people can spend time with positive role models, strengthen friendships and access support before problems escalate.
By linking daytime and evening support, staff build stronger relationships with participants and provide consistent guidance. This allows the team to respond quickly to challenges, support personal development and help young people make safer decisions while staying connected to education and their community.
