Siobhian Brown MSP Visits RUTS

MSP Siobhian Brown visiting CashBack programme RUTS.

The Minister for Victims and Community Safety, Siobhian Brown MSP, visited the Rural & Urban Training Scheme (RUTS) on 31st January. RUTS received a CashBack for Communities award of up to £420,000 over 2023 to 2026.

The visit follows an invitation to the Minister from constituency MSP for Midlothian South, Tweeddale and Lauderdale, Christine Graham at a Parliamentary Debate in December. The debate coincided with the publication of the CashBack for Communities Impact Report for 2022/23. The RUTS project was highlighted at the debate, and the Minister accepted the invitation to visit the programme and see in-person the vital work they do.

RUTS CashBack Academies offers motorbike, cycling and non-contact boxing/fitness academies to young people aged 14 – 19 at risk of disengaging from school, anti-social behaviour or entering the justice system. The programme supports participants through providing skills for life and employability.

During the visit, the Minister spoke with Penicuik High School pupils about how the programme has helped to prepare them for work. Along with giving them skills for their CV such as awards and accreditations, the programme measures soft outcomes such as improved mental health and confidence, as well as making them aware of the impacts of negative behaviour whilst encouraging participation in sports and physical activity.
