Target Group – Young people disadvantaged by:-

  • Living in areas of deprivation; and
  • Being excluded, or at risk of exclusion from school; and
  • Being at risk of being involved in antisocial behaviour, offending/re-offending

Age range : 10 to 17 years

Summary of Project

Project will form 15 new CashBack Schools of Rugby at host secondary schools (and feeder primary schools) to some of the most deprived areas in Scotland. Providing opportunities, building capacity and confidence in disadvantaged young people whilst developing physical fitness, cognitive skills, physical competencies and personal qualities. The project will bring participation in positive activities and help young people contribute positively to their communities. Scottish Rugby will identify 15 new secondary schools situated in, or taking young people from, the most deprived areas of Scotland and introduce and develop a CashBack Schools of Rugby – Sport for Change programme into these schools’. The programme will involve:

1. Rugby starter programme (children aged 10 – 14): Children from primary 6 through to 3rd year being introduced to rugby in curricular sessions and transitioning into extra-curricular rugby and to experiencing playing for their school in inter school competition. This rugby programme will be led by teachers and coaches based in the secondary school and would be supplemented by senior pupils trained to work with the junior players. There will be teams as follows: Primary 6/7 co-ed teams/Secondary 1/U13 male team/Secondary 2/U14 male team, Secondary 2/U14 female team, and Secondary 3/U15 male team level.

2. Junior phase attainment through rugby programme (Children aged S1 – S3): Young people will opt into or be referred to a curricular programme that will educate pupils in the following: Values of the game, leadership, engagement, achievement, enjoyment & respect; Laws of the game; Nutrition & Strength and conditioning education; Cross Curricular workshops; Bronze Youth achievement award; and Match and individual analysis

3. Senior phase attainment through rugby programme (Children aged 15 – 17): Young people will opt into or be referred to the curricular programme. The programme would deliver the following for the pupils: A Youth Achievement Award in Rugby (with the attainment of the associated SCQF credit points); A playing experience against other schools; Match and individual analysis; Coaching/Leadership experience in the junior phase and broad participation phase of the programme; and Scottish Rugby and world rugby qualifications (Scottish Rugby modern apprenticeship scheme) in: RugbyRight, World Rugby Passport, Start Rugby, Match Official level 1, S&C level 1 (optional) and UKCC Level 1 (optional).
